Cornes & Company Limited was established in Yokohama in 1861 and is the oldest international trading house in Japan. Under the leadership of its founder, Frederick Cornes, a young English textile merchant, the company began trading in silk and tea but soon expanded its activities to include other merchandise, and then shipping and insurance. Today, the Cornes group employs over 700 people in Japan and hundreds more in its operations in the USA, Australia and Hong Kong.

In Japan, the company has four main areas of business; automobiles, insurance & maritime, agricultural machinery, and high technology products and services.

a) Automobiles
Cornes is the sole importer and distributor in Japan for Ferrari and Maserati. The company undertakes the promotion, marketing, sales and servicing of these motor vehicles through its own network of showrooms and technical centres. Cornes is also a dealer for Rolls-Royce & Bentley cars in Japan.

b) Agricultural Machinery
Cornes agricultural machinery business is headquartered in the centre of Japan's dairy farming community in Hokkaido, and operates a network of sales and service subsidiaries throughout the rural areas of Japan.

In addition to farming equipment, the company is a leading supplier of advanced milking machines, computerized livestock handling systems, and bio-gas generation plants.

c) Insurance & Maritime
Cornes specializes in the provision of complete insurance broking and risk management services for industry and commerce. The insurance operations are based in Tokyo.
As Lloyds Agent the company also provides maritime intelligence and specializes in damage surveys and claims settling services. The principal locations are Yokohama, Kobe and Nagoya. The sale of maritime charts and publications are likewise a key activity.

d) High Technology
Cornes involvement in high technology areas extends from the supply of equipment used in the manufacture of semiconductors, through marketing, distribution and sale of IC chips, RF and Microwave components, Electro-Optic devices, Infra-Red cameras, Test & Measuring Equipment, and Avionics and Aerospace systems. In recent years, the company has enjoyed considerable growth and success in the field of mobile communications technology and next generation wireless products and services.

e) General Trading
From its earliest beginnings trading in silk and tea, CORNES has built up an extensive network of commercial partners throughout the world, across any number of sectors. Presently, we import and distribute food related items and culinary items, for example, PEUGEOT pepper & salt mills – a leading French brand which holds a long history back in 19th century. England’s JRS Flavours for beverages are another area where CORNES has developed expertise over a long period of time.
